We produce wine with a combination of traditional and the most modern methods of winemaking. Aware that good wine is made in the winery, great wine is made in the vineyard, we maintain a regular conversation throughout the year between the viticulture and winery teams.
The Specialist is recognised as someone who "concentrates primarily on a particular subject or activity". At Thompson Estate we concentrate all our skill, experience and local knowledge in the limited production of our most exceptional wines for The Specialist range. The fruit for this range is chosen from selected rows on our sustainably grown vineyard in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River. "As a Specialist, I am proud to put my name to it."
- Peter Thompson, Owner
Wine demands balance of viticulture, winemaking, maturation and presentation. The joy of making wine in Margaret River liberates a certain passion and creativity which our Four Chambers range expresses.
Our cellar door is nestled in our picturesque vineyard and is open 10:30 - 4:30 daily.
Designed in 2003, Thompson Estate's cellar door has won several architectural awards. With an intimate boutique setting, the cellar door enables visitors to be in the vineyard and the barrel room while tasting the wine. Patrons can enjoy first hand the aromas of wine fermenting in french oak barrels while tasting their favourite varieties.
The vineyard was purchased in 1994. The location was chosen after a long search for a block which could take advantage of the cooling breezes from the Southern Ocean, Indian Ocean and Geographe Bay and with ideal soils to support viticulture. The block is about 3km from the coast in the Wilyabrup Valley, known to produce some of the greatest wines in Australia.
