Those visiting the vineyard two years ago will recall the magnificent Peter Lundberg sculptures. Peter was our artist in residence in the summer of 2014, one of the benefits of our sponsorship of the Bondi and Cottesloe Sculpture by the Sea.
As an internationally recognised sculptor displayed in many states in USA, Germany, China and Australia, Peter Lundberg has previously won the best prize at Sculpture by the Sea in Bondi in Sydney. His method of sculpting is to use the earth as the mould and form a cast with a mix of concrete and local soil, which after careful drying and strengthening, are carefully lifted from the soil and erected.
In a period of intense creativity over 4 months, he created a series of sculptures at Thompson Estate and the full set was titled "Land of Giants" and became a much discussed, indeed controversial, feature of the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition at Cottesloe in 2016.
Peter returned to Perth for the 2019 Sculpture by the Sea and returned to Thompson Estate, installing two of these magnificent sculptures on the vineyard, fittingly back home in the earth where they were created.
Visitors to the winery will see the striking sculptures welcoming them to the vineyard entrance and poised between the winery and the barrel hall.
